IRB
Today's class discussion on IRB was very useful, now it feels like I can do it and it is not so scary. I think it will be a great practice for us, especially we will most likly need it when we reach the dissertation stage in our careers :) I will still have to figure out how to write the proposal of the study that will be looking only at the artcifacts.....and not human subjects.

Svetlana-
I am in the same ‘boat’ as you are. I have the same basic issue-my research data will be based primarily on artifacts. I plan to review a number of international governmental web pages to determine how much information is being provided to the public in those countries.
I talked to Dr. Becky about my project yesterday. She and I agreed—web pages are artifacts. Prior to this class, I would have considered this type of research (internet searches) as secondary research.
Campbell’s article indicates that artifacts are considered primary research. Other examples of primary research include interviews and observations.
After I analyze the web pages (the artifacts), I expect to create a number of questions about the artifacts. These questions will be presented via email to the respective international agencies. Their responses, if they choose to respond, will be considered in my research. I plan to explain this logic in my IRB submittal.
In summary, I am also analyzing artifacts, and the artifacts will be my main source of research data, but this research may lead to additional questions that require answering. You will probably experience something similar.

Svetlana,
I found the first reading for this week very helpful. Especially regarding meaning and "thick" description. I'm in this with you--a wide-eyed novice. I keep wandering away from artifacts, and I'm having to watch this.
As I wrote some notes from our readings, the artifacts aren't separate from the individuals; they are the focus but we can't research the artifacts separate from the human interaction or the meaning changes.

All I ask is that you justify why your topic is appropriate for a "field methods" class. If your "field" is the internet, for instance, I would expect you to look at sites.....
