Photography principles

Doing the third podcast, I was trying to work more with the audio, i.e. extracting the audio. Also I used primarily photographs. It was a definitely interesting experience! After wathing the final video, I realized that the voice in different clips varies, in some it is high, in others it is low. It was my first experience with the voice over. Next time I must have the mic at the same distance and try to keep the same "volume" of the voice. Also, I noticed that the video' time is longer than the actual clip, I believe some clips were not deleted when I was compressing the video :((
For the final project I will try to integrate working with voice over and video.

Svetlana,

I really enjoyed your podcast on “what makes a good photograph.” Being a photographer, I always enjoy hearing others talk about photography and joining in on conversations with them about it. I see, actually hear, what you mean by your voice over being at different levels at different times. I honestly do not think it is that bad though, especially for your first time doing voice over. A couple of things you could do 1) clip the lapel to your shirt/jacket this way it will be the same distance the whole time; 2) write out what you are going to say first then do the voice over all at once. Either way should help you get more consistent audio. One suggestion, when you are talking about “rule of thirds” it may help more to draw the lines showing the rule of thirds on the photographs (obviously you would do this in Photoshop) – mainly something to help show where the thirds fall. Also, I wasn’t exactly sure what you were talking about with “Photography is an interest generator.” While I did enjoyed seeing the picture of your baby (I am assuming it is your baby?) smiling and not cropped vs. the picture with cropped feet and an unhappy baby, I was not sure of the point. I think more description and examples might help viewers more.

I really enjoyed the images you choose and I felt they are great examples for what you are covering. Good job and I really enjoyed your topic. I look forward to seeing your next podcast and hearing about your final paper or project.

It sounds like you may have been using the mic on the HDV camera, unfortunately it tends to pick up the noise of the camera, particularly the tape mechanism—I’ve noticed this in some other videos as well. You might try using an external mic next time if you used the camera mic. I thought the voice over sounded good, though, as you mentioned, the levels vary a bit. I’d like to have seen you talk about a few more imaging issues, but this is not a first run at the topic. A couple of content suggestions-you might begin by listing the issues you are going to talk about and close with a short review of concepts. Kind of a tell them what you are going to tell them, tell them the information, and then remind them what you’ve told them. I look forward to the next podcast.

Svetlana, this was another great podcast. Like Rob said the changes in audio really weren't that bad. The suggestions he gave you can really help with that. Also like Rob said it could have been really helpful to have lines showing the "rule of thirds" section off. More examples for your last point about "Photography is an interest generator" also could have explained your point out some more.

All in all the pictures were all great and were good examples for your points. Great job and I can't wait to see your next podcast and final paper/project.

Good topic and excellent work. I loved all the images you chose. As far as the voice over, I didn't like the background noise that was picked up by the mic. I usually try to mask this with very faint music in the background. I would have liked to see a little more explanation about the elements you discussed. For example, you mentioned the frame of a photo but didn't explain what it is. I would have also liked more explanation as to why the river and the pathway are cool and good elements of the photograph. It is because they cause the viewer's eye to move through the photo. I also would have liked to see some interaction with the rule of thirds. Such as drawing lines on the photo to demonstrate the principle.

I also thought the podcast seemed a little short, almost like you ran out of things to say. All, in all though, a great podcast and I look forward to the last one.

Svetlana, good third podcast. It was very informative. I liked that you addressed some common issues with photography. Your voice-over wasn't bad and you spoke very clearly. The rule of thirds was a good topic to speak over because I don't think that some people understand exactly what it is. I liked the images, or photos you chose to use. I felt they were very good examples of the material you covered. I look forward to your fourth podcast.
